 XRHealth (MA, U.S.), a leader in the emerging field of extended reality (XR) therapy, has unveiled an enhanced medical XR platform that incorporates AI technology into therapeutic systems.  

The platform is designed to revolutionize medical care by integrating AI-driven XR technology into existing workflows. The company has secured significant investment over the years. In 2022, XRHealth raised $10 million from prominent investors, including High Tech Computer Corporation (Taoyuan City, Taiwan) and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).  

Earlier funding rounds also contributed significantly to the company’s expansion. In 2021, XRHealth secured $9 million, following a $7 million investment in 2020. The latest investment the company secured was in January 2024, as the company raised an additional $6 million. Building on this momentum, XRHealth recently acquired the cognitive training platform NeuroReality and its flagship product, Koji’s Quest.  

However, despite its potential, the integration of AI-driven XR platforms like XRHealth’s in existing clinical workflow also presents risks and challenges.  

Data privacy and security are significant issues not only with the use of XR technology but also with AI-powered medical technologies in general, posing a risk to the security of sensitive patient information. 

Additionally, the reliance on AI algorithms for treatment recommendations introduces potential concerns regarding accountability and accuracy. These issues arise particularly when the system fails to consider unique patient needs or subtle clinical nuances. The risk becomes more pronounced if the AI software is trained on incomplete or biased data, as inaccuracies in the training data can propagate into the system.

To address these challenges, healthcare professionals and developers must collaborate to create transparent, secure, and unbiased systems that can be accepted and integrated into contemporary healthcare practices.
